The Father of Modern Bodybuilding, Eugen Sandow, was the first man to make demonstrations of his body in public. Sandow’s goal was to show that it was possible to have a body like the Greek and Roman sculptures of the Perfect Man (for example, the celebrated sculpture, created by Michelangelo between 1501 and 1504 titled “David”), and that’s just what he did, mission accomplished! At certain moments, his body had the exact same proportions as some of the Greek and Roman statues known for being examples of the Perfect Man. That’s how he began to develop something that today is known as Bodybuilding.

Sandow was born in Prussia (today’s Germany), but soon after completing his military service, he moved to London. In the English capital, he soon became well-known. From then, he began to receive proposals to exhibit has body in public. His fame caused him to be invited to participate in films and that many well-known public figures vied for his company. He opened a gym and an institute where he taught his techniques and healthy eating habits. He even promoted the first bodybuilding competitions which were a success!

Eugen Sandow died at 58 years old. The cause of death isn’t conclusive. It’s believed that he died of an aneurism, but there are other theories about his death, such as a car accident and there’s a theory that he died from a blow to the head.

He’s still remembered today. The winner of Mr. Olimpia receives a bronze statue of Eugen Sandow, as a way to honor the man who is considered the Father of Modern Bodybuilding.
